ramble…ramble…ramble…

Okay, so, i wanted to post something today, as i’m gonna be pretty busy over the next few days – i’m moving back to Uni and i’ve got a lot of things on…so i thought i should put a random post up to keep my blog active…i was gonna do an album review, but i don’t really have the time to sit here and write up loads, so instead i’m gonna do an update of random news…in a slot i’m calling…‘The Random News Post That Interests Me, But Probably Won’t Interest Many Other People’...or..maybe not!!!

andrewbird1.jpgAndrew Bird is touring the U.K again…so any British readers check him out… he is also playing across Europe and America…CHECK HIM OUT(!)…

Official Website for a full list of dates…Andrew Bird

radiohead_3_show.jpgRadiohead‘s new album is rumoured to be out in March 2008…and i can’t wait…i’ve been going on a complete Radiohead binge recently, so the thought of a new album excites me greatly!!!

sbit_homepage_zap.jpgIron Maiden have announced tour dates in Australia…and supposedly tickets are flying…Europe will hopefully be announced soon…so, keep checking the website for details…official web

Touring Bands who i recommend you check out or go and see…

The Twilight Sad – have recieved great praise from journos everywhere and are one of the best new bands around…i will do my own review of their album soon, but it is so damn good that it will be one of my albums of the year…anywho, they’re touring with Idlewild soon… Twilight Sad Myspace

Broken Family Band – another great new British band who need to get more recognition – they’re touring Britain in October, but you need to buy their new album wherever you are…and check out their new video on youtube (it’s called ‘Leaps’)… Myspace

Bad news…The Sex Pistols have announced some new dates – now don’t get me wrong…Never Mind The B******S is a good album…but they’re charging nearly £40 for tickets…and the whole thing just stinks of ‘cash-in’ – and using the 30th anniversary as a reason to line their pockets some more…i’m just really disappointed – doesn’t really reflect a very ‘punk’ attitude does it…hmmm…

autumns.jpgFinally, just a quick reminder that The Autumns‘ new album is out, not next week, but the week after (October 8th to be precise)….and again, i can’t wait…it is going to be so good – i’m hoping i’m gonna be able to sneak a promo copy from somewhere so a review may be able to be read next week…if not, then you’re going to have to wait patiently for the week starting Oct 8th!!! Also, they’re touring with the Kissaway Trail in November…so go watch them live aswell…dates on their myspace…Autumns’ Myspace

I’m hoping to do an article on their record label…Bella Union…at some point…when i’m less busy…and i will do an actual album review soon…can’t wait can ya?!?!?

speak soon…peace…a.b

btw…i can’t believe i’ve rambled on so much!!!

Singled Out…The Autumns – Boys

This new section of posts, now entitled ‘Singled Out’, has been created for reviewing singles…i’m not really a regular buyer of singles, so there will probably not be many of these types of posts, but i thought i would create it anyway…

Moving on, the first review that i am going to perform, is on the Autumns’ new single, ‘Boys’, released on the 1st October in the U.K through Bella Union.

Now, i have already previewed this single in my earlier post about the Autumns, but this will be a bit more concise…so, here goes…

‘Boys’ is not your typical Autumns track…it has heavily distorted guitars (more so than normal!), synths, a more prominent chorus and it is finished in under three minutes…and i can’t think of that many more recent Autumns’ tracks to be finished in three minutes! With a hammering drum intro, the song moves straight into the verse…again, not something you normally associate with the Autumns…with lead singer Matthew Kelly reciting the band’s usual abstract poetry over Frankie Koroshec’s many chord changes and Dustin Morgan’s grinding bass! From the off, the track sounds nothing like the bands usual sound…

…and then the chorus hits you in the face…the synth punctuating the start of each new line…forming perhaps one of the catchiest choruses ever, especially the refrain, which stays in your head for days…seriously…

The song has a slight pause whilst the band catch their breath…the strained guitar hammering over the drum rolls…to build back into the final chorus, with group vocals singing the refrain…before the song finishes almost as soon as it started! A key factor in the song’s success is the amazing performance of Steve Elkins on the drums…it fits the song perfectly and keeps the song moving at its awesome pace. However, this track has come into criticism by some, who believe that the Autumns’ are denying their shoegazer roots and searching for the commercial sounds that dominate the radio…and yes, i can see their point, the song does sound more like a band trying to sound alternative, but i think it is a natural progression, and not at all representative of the band’s ‘new’ sound! This track is an obvious choice for a first single, so that it can find it’s way into a market that is polluted with bands sounding the same, and stand out from the others by doing things differently – thus introducing people to the band’s more melodic, shoegazer side…

…which is evidenced on b-side, ‘Joy’, another short slice of music, but completely different to ‘Boys’! ‘Joy’ is backed by clean guitars, chiming underneath Matt Kelly’s gorgeous vocals…before the song breaks down into handclaps and finally a horn section at the end. It is a perfect slice of pop music…easy on the ears and a treat to listen to!

So, overall, ‘Boys’ is an intriguing first single from the band, which has created fear in some fans hearts, whilst attracting new listeners! I just hope that the dismissers of the song do not take it as a representation of the whole new album, as i’ve heard some tracks, and have been very impressed! But, in my opinion, ‘Boys’ is a catchy song that is the perfect choice as a single…and you’ve got to buy it when it’s released to hear the beautiful ‘Joy’…

5/5…

Radiohead…still alive?!?

So, Radiohead have started posting again on their blog (Dead Air Space)…at first, confirming that they were still alive(!)…starting a crazy amount of speculation about codes and secret messages…

…people are suggesting that the track listing etc might be being given away in these ‘secret messages’…with a number of people deciphering the codes – revealing random phrases…

…i don’t know…heck, i’m not in Radiohead so i have no idea…

…what i do know, is that their 7th album is finished and is sitting on the shelf, waiting for a record deal…although it isn’t scheduled for release until next year – far too long for me to wait…as this was one of my most anticipated releases of the year!!!

Anywho, i’m gonna get over that fact, and be content that the new Autumns’ album will be out soon…but if you’re interested in code-breaking, then keep an eye on the radiohead website…and good luck with it if you do want to try…I, on the other hand, am too busy writing about randomness to spend my time cracking codes…

…i will write a more interesting post tomorrow…a review of something…finally…

The Autumns…

Okay, so with my first proper post, im gonna write about the best band on the planet at this current time…L.A’s The Autumns! Now normally, i would say Iron Maiden are the best band on the planet, but for the time being, i just can’t get enough of The Autumns and their new material…

The new album, Fake Noise from a Box of Toys, is due out on October 8th in the U.K (next year for America), and i can’t wait to get it! After hearing some of the tracks, i’ve gotta say it is quite a departure from previous albums. The songs are much more immediate, and choruses seem to be much more prominent!

Now, i have heard grumblings amongst other fans that the departure is too great, and that The Autumns’ have just turned into A.N.Other rock band…but i think they’re missing the point…

…the earlier albums were shoegazer albums, no question, and with this new edgier sound, the older fans appear to be worried that the band are leaving their roots behind – however, like all good musicians, they have actually adapted the sound! On some of the songs, the most beautiful sounds emerge, and Matthew Kelly’s vocals have never seemed sweeter or more gorgeous than on one particular track (which i am not gonna name…i don’t want to spoil the suprise!)…so for those who are dismissing the band as sell-outs, then don’t give up hope just yet!

On the otherhand, i can understand some people’s disappointment in the choice of the first single, Boys (out on Oct 1st U.K), as, from what i’ve heard at least, it is definitely the most un-Autumns track on the album…hence, why some people have come in with negative criticism. In comparison, i love Boys and think it has one of the catchiest choruses ever!!!

Anyway, i think i’m getting too deep into this subject at the present time, as i need to save some of my ramblings for when i actually review the album and the single (i shall review the single shortly, having received a promo copy)!! I just thought i’d let my opinion be known beforehand…

…peace and all that stuff…a.b

Welcome…

Well…this is new…my first post…

This blog is being written as a form of expression and opinion (from me!) about topics that i choose…i’m going to primarily be focusing on music…good and bad…by producing news and reviews that i find interesting…or that i feel like talking about…

I will also post randomness about nothing that will have no purpose and be of no interest to anyone but me…although, that is what these things are for, aren’t they???

Anyway, just to clarify, all writings in this are my opinion unless otherwise stated…feel free to comment…although keep it nice…and if there is actually someone reading this (which i doubt there is!)…then thanks…

Peace…a.b
