Radiohead – In Rainbows

Ok then, i am going to start this short review with an admission…and a shameful one at that…this Radiohead album is probably my album of the year – it was so, so close between this and my number one that there was nothing between them!!!

So why then, is Radiohead my number two??? Two words for you – “Disc Two”…yes, that is right…after hearing the second disk of In Rainbows, it is impossible for me to put it at number one – not because the songs on disc 2 are bad…but because they are so good, in particular ‘Down is the new up’, ‘Up on the Ladder’ and ‘Banger and Mash’ – i cannot believe that these songs were not deemed good enough to be put on the main album, as only ’15 Step’, ‘Bodysnatchers’ and ‘Jigsaw Falling Into Place’ are of the same quality on the actual album…

And this leaves me wondering why Radiohead couldn’t find a place for these songs on In Rainbows…yes, i can see that they maybe don’t fit the mood – they are more ‘rocky’ than the bluesy tone of In Rainbows…but the songs are that good, that they would find a place on any other bands albums!!! I think that this might be the curse of ‘Hail To The Thief’…which is a great album, but is let down by a few songs…some filler…and it would have been a much better album if it was only 10/11 songs long…and so, in a way, i guess Radiohead might have been a bit scared by this!!!

This is the reason why In Rainbows is not my number one, because i have to judge it on the 10 songs that make up the album, and i feel that they left 3 of the best ones out…but it is still a fine album!!

I am sure that it will probably go down as Radiohead’s ‘love’ album, as Thom Yorke has claimed that many of the songs relate to relationships, and the tone of the album is soothing and romantic, except for the vicious ‘Bodysnatchers’, which is probably the best track on the album – the heavily distorted guitars, Yorke’s paranoid/parasitic lyrics and its amazing tempo…one of Radiohead’s best songs full stop!!!

I have already mentioned my other two stand-out tracks…the dance beat majesty of ’15 Step’ and the great ‘Jigsaw…’, but the other tracks are good aswell…much more romantic than any other Radiohead album, it is an intriguing new direction from Radiohead…and a good one at that!!!

In my first review of this album, i questioned whether In Rainbows could ever be deemed a classic album as OK Computer is…two months on, and this Radiohead album is already a classic in my opinion, even without the second disc!!! It has everything that you love about Radiohead, and at the end of the day, that is all you need to know when reading this review…In Rainbows is just pure Radiohead, and i love it!!!

…My album of the year shall hopefully be revealed tomorrow…to mark Christmas Day…so read it when you can…

Reviewed…Radiohead – In Rainbows!

inrainbows-small.jpg

It’s Wednesday the 10th of October, and the new Radiohead album has been released! Yes, after four long years, the much anticipated follow-up to 2003’s Hail To The Thief has hit the shelves…well…the ‘online’ shelves at least! So, is it all it’s cracked up to be? Is it another experimental masterpiece? Well, the answer appears to be both yes and no, in my opinion at least – will it get as much critical acclaim as OK Computer…not a chance…in fact, i’ve already read reviews panning the album, some claiming it’s the same old Radiohead who have done nothing new or original…and i wonder if they’ve listened to the same album as me!?!?!?!

Album opener, 15 Step, begins with electro beats before Thom Yorke’s vocals pierce the noise, ‘how come i end up where i started?’, before the guitar kicks in, subtle and minimalistic. The song continues in this fashion until 2 and a half minutes, where it subsides into ambient synths, until it breaks down towards the end, the music seemingly falling apart! On first listen, this track immediately reminds the listener of Yorke’s The Eraser, but yet, it is not nearly as dark as the material on there, with a special, children’s ‘YAY!’ being included at one point. Of course, in typical Radiohead fashion, the lyrics do reflect much darker imagery…as is continued in the rest of the album! Continue reading

Radiohead…in rainbows?!?

So…the new album will be out next week – at least online anyway, as it’s available for digital download…or, for the more completest Radiohead fan, you can buy the Discbox, which includes the actual album, entitled ‘In Rainbows’, along with a second disc of songs that didn’t make the final cut, a vinyl version of the album, plus a wide range of photos, etc…all for the price of £40…to be received on December 3rd! Of course, if you buy the discbox set, you also get the album to be downloaded for free next week…a very nice gesture of the band…

…alternatively, you can pay absolutely nothing, as Radiohead have introduced a ‘pay as much as you want’ plan for the download, so you can pay nothing…or everything…your choice!!!

Personally, i decided that the discbox looked the best buy…so i went ahead and bought it! The tracklisting of the album looks good (a number of videos are floating around Youtube – so you can ‘try before you buy’!), and, as it’s Radiohead, i think it’s almost guaranteed that the album will be great…i mean, i don’t think Radiohead have actually made a bad album!!! Although i’m not impressed with the album title…it doesn’t really fit for me…but i’m not going to let that affect my judgement on the album – i will review it when i receive it!!!

Anyway, this news was greeted by me with many smiles and much happiness…so that’s the most important thing!!!

As a side note: The Autumns new album ‘Fake Noise From A Box Of Toys’ is out next Monday in the UK – i hope to do a review around Wednesday/Thursday so keep your eyes peeled!!!

Peace…a.b
