Albums of 2007 – Number 2: Radiohead

Radiohead – In Rainbows

Ok then, i am going to start this short review with an admission…and a shameful one at that…this Radiohead album is probably my album of the year – it was so, so close between this and my number one that there was nothing between them!!!

So why then, is Radiohead my number two??? Two words for you – “Disc Two”…yes, that is right…after hearing the second disk of In Rainbows, it is impossible for me to put it at number one – not because the songs on disc 2 are bad…but because they are so good, in particular ‘Down is the new up’, ‘Up on the Ladder’ and ‘Banger and Mash’ – i cannot believe that these songs were not deemed good enough to be put on the main album, as only ’15 Step’, ‘Bodysnatchers’ and ‘Jigsaw Falling Into Place’ are of the same quality on the actual album…

And this leaves me wondering why Radiohead couldn’t find a place for these songs on In Rainbows…yes, i can see that they maybe don’t fit the mood – they are more ‘rocky’ than the bluesy tone of In Rainbows…but the songs are that good, that they would find a place on any other bands albums!!! I think that this might be the curse of ‘Hail To The Thief’…which is a great album, but is let down by a few songs…some filler…and it would have been a much better album if it was only 10/11 songs long…and so, in a way, i guess Radiohead might have been a bit scared by this!!!

This is the reason why In Rainbows is not my number one, because i have to judge it on the 10 songs that make up the album, and i feel that they left 3 of the best ones out…but it is still a fine album!!

I am sure that it will probably go down as Radiohead’s ‘love’ album, as Thom Yorke has claimed that many of the songs relate to relationships, and the tone of the album is soothing and romantic, except for the vicious ‘Bodysnatchers’, which is probably the best track on the album – the heavily distorted guitars, Yorke’s paranoid/parasitic lyrics and its amazing tempo…one of Radiohead’s best songs full stop!!!

I have already mentioned my other two stand-out tracks…the dance beat majesty of ’15 Step’ and the great ‘Jigsaw…’, but the other tracks are good aswell…much more romantic than any other Radiohead album, it is an intriguing new direction from Radiohead…and a good one at that!!!

In my first review of this album, i questioned whether In Rainbows could ever be deemed a classic album as OK Computer is…two months on, and this Radiohead album is already a classic in my opinion, even without the second disc!!! It has everything that you love about Radiohead, and at the end of the day, that is all you need to know when reading this review…In Rainbows is just pure Radiohead, and i love it!!!

…My album of the year shall hopefully be revealed tomorrow…to mark Christmas Day…so read it when you can…

…*tumbleweed blows past*…

Hmm…this week has been a surprisingly quiet week in terms of music, so this is only some short randomness to keep the blog ticking over!!!

cribs_press.jpg

The Cribs new single is out on the 29th October…and it’s gooooooood!!!Don’t you wanna be relevant is one hell of a catchy track that stays stuck in the head for days – i’ve pre-ordered, so i may do a second ‘Singled Out…’ post (exciting!).

Radiohead‘s manager has been murmuring about a world tour starting in May until the end of the year…doing shows on-and-off during that time…taking holidays for the rest of the time…aaaaahh the life of an international rockstar!!! Anyway, i hope that i will be able to get tickets this time… *crosses fingers hopefully*

The White Stripes have now released a range of (two different) cameras – one for Meg, one for Jack…and they are blooming expensive – it would cost me £240 for both or £120 for just one…and, although i love random things, i don’t love random things that much! If i had a load of spare money, then yes, i would buy, as the cameras do look quite cool, but alas…i do not!!!However, i must just say that i am disappointed that the White Stripes have resorted to selling these – i can’t help but feel that they are becoming more of a brand than a band…which is disappointing – let’s just hope that The Raconteurs come back soon so that Jack White can get back to doing what he does best – making music rather than selling his soul to commercialism!!!

Good news of the week, is that Brendan Benson has posted some new tracks on his website, which is currently undergoing a revamp – on first listen, they don’t sound as good as the demos he posted on his myspace a while back, but i think they might be growers (a bit long tho…) i still can’t wait for his album – i love all his others!!!

The Autumns and Andrew Bird are soon going to be in the UK to tour, and i can’t wait – it’s gonna be so good!!!

I have recently bought:

PJ Harvey – White Chalk

Hot Hot Hot – Happiness LTD

The Hives – The Black and White Album

Explosions In The Sky – All of a sudden, I miss everyone

Beach House – Beach House

Aphex Twin – Come To Daddy EP

Some of these may appear as reviews soon…stay tuned… 🙂

that’s all for now…peace…a.b

Reviewed…Radiohead – In Rainbows!

inrainbows-small.jpg

It’s Wednesday the 10th of October, and the new Radiohead album has been released! Yes, after four long years, the much anticipated follow-up to 2003’s Hail To The Thief has hit the shelves…well…the ‘online’ shelves at least! So, is it all it’s cracked up to be? Is it another experimental masterpiece? Well, the answer appears to be both yes and no, in my opinion at least – will it get as much critical acclaim as OK Computer…not a chance…in fact, i’ve already read reviews panning the album, some claiming it’s the same old Radiohead who have done nothing new or original…and i wonder if they’ve listened to the same album as me!?!?!?!

Album opener, 15 Step, begins with electro beats before Thom Yorke’s vocals pierce the noise, ‘how come i end up where i started?’, before the guitar kicks in, subtle and minimalistic. The song continues in this fashion until 2 and a half minutes, where it subsides into ambient synths, until it breaks down towards the end, the music seemingly falling apart! On first listen, this track immediately reminds the listener of Yorke’s The Eraser, but yet, it is not nearly as dark as the material on there, with a special, children’s ‘YAY!’ being included at one point. Of course, in typical Radiohead fashion, the lyrics do reflect much darker imagery…as is continued in the rest of the album! Continue reading

Radiohead…in rainbows?!?

So…the new album will be out next week – at least online anyway, as it’s available for digital download…or, for the more completest Radiohead fan, you can buy the Discbox, which includes the actual album, entitled ‘In Rainbows’, along with a second disc of songs that didn’t make the final cut, a vinyl version of the album, plus a wide range of photos, etc…all for the price of £40…to be received on December 3rd! Of course, if you buy the discbox set, you also get the album to be downloaded for free next week…a very nice gesture of the band…

…alternatively, you can pay absolutely nothing, as Radiohead have introduced a ‘pay as much as you want’ plan for the download, so you can pay nothing…or everything…your choice!!!

Personally, i decided that the discbox looked the best buy…so i went ahead and bought it! The tracklisting of the album looks good (a number of videos are floating around Youtube – so you can ‘try before you buy’!), and, as it’s Radiohead, i think it’s almost guaranteed that the album will be great…i mean, i don’t think Radiohead have actually made a bad album!!! Although i’m not impressed with the album title…it doesn’t really fit for me…but i’m not going to let that affect my judgement on the album – i will review it when i receive it!!!

Anyway, this news was greeted by me with many smiles and much happiness…so that’s the most important thing!!!

As a side note: The Autumns new album ‘Fake Noise From A Box Of Toys’ is out next Monday in the UK – i hope to do a review around Wednesday/Thursday so keep your eyes peeled!!!

Peace…a.b

ramble…ramble…ramble…

Okay, so, i wanted to post something today, as i’m gonna be pretty busy over the next few days – i’m moving back to Uni and i’ve got a lot of things on…so i thought i should put a random post up to keep my blog active…i was gonna do an album review, but i don’t really have the time to sit here and write up loads, so instead i’m gonna do an update of random news…in a slot i’m calling…‘The Random News Post That Interests Me, But Probably Won’t Interest Many Other People’...or..maybe not!!!

andrewbird1.jpgAndrew Bird is touring the U.K again…so any British readers check him out… he is also playing across Europe and America…CHECK HIM OUT(!)…

Official Website for a full list of dates…Andrew Bird

radiohead_3_show.jpgRadiohead‘s new album is rumoured to be out in March 2008…and i can’t wait…i’ve been going on a complete Radiohead binge recently, so the thought of a new album excites me greatly!!!

sbit_homepage_zap.jpgIron Maiden have announced tour dates in Australia…and supposedly tickets are flying…Europe will hopefully be announced soon…so, keep checking the website for details…official web

Touring Bands who i recommend you check out or go and see…

The Twilight Sad – have recieved great praise from journos everywhere and are one of the best new bands around…i will do my own review of their album soon, but it is so damn good that it will be one of my albums of the year…anywho, they’re touring with Idlewild soon… Twilight Sad Myspace

Broken Family Band – another great new British band who need to get more recognition – they’re touring Britain in October, but you need to buy their new album wherever you are…and check out their new video on youtube (it’s called ‘Leaps’)… Myspace

Bad news…The Sex Pistols have announced some new dates – now don’t get me wrong…Never Mind The B******S is a good album…but they’re charging nearly £40 for tickets…and the whole thing just stinks of ‘cash-in’ – and using the 30th anniversary as a reason to line their pockets some more…i’m just really disappointed – doesn’t really reflect a very ‘punk’ attitude does it…hmmm…

autumns.jpgFinally, just a quick reminder that The Autumns‘ new album is out, not next week, but the week after (October 8th to be precise)….and again, i can’t wait…it is going to be so good – i’m hoping i’m gonna be able to sneak a promo copy from somewhere so a review may be able to be read next week…if not, then you’re going to have to wait patiently for the week starting Oct 8th!!! Also, they’re touring with the Kissaway Trail in November…so go watch them live aswell…dates on their myspace…Autumns’ Myspace

I’m hoping to do an article on their record label…Bella Union…at some point…when i’m less busy…and i will do an actual album review soon…can’t wait can ya?!?!?

speak soon…peace…a.b

btw…i can’t believe i’ve rambled on so much!!!

Radiohead…still alive?!?

So, Radiohead have started posting again on their blog (Dead Air Space)…at first, confirming that they were still alive(!)…starting a crazy amount of speculation about codes and secret messages…

…people are suggesting that the track listing etc might be being given away in these ‘secret messages’…with a number of people deciphering the codes – revealing random phrases…

…i don’t know…heck, i’m not in Radiohead so i have no idea…

…what i do know, is that their 7th album is finished and is sitting on the shelf, waiting for a record deal…although it isn’t scheduled for release until next year – far too long for me to wait…as this was one of my most anticipated releases of the year!!!

Anywho, i’m gonna get over that fact, and be content that the new Autumns’ album will be out soon…but if you’re interested in code-breaking, then keep an eye on the radiohead website…and good luck with it if you do want to try…I, on the other hand, am too busy writing about randomness to spend my time cracking codes…

…i will write a more interesting post tomorrow…a review of something…finally…

peace…a.b
